BETWEEN FORM AND MEANING
Metaphors as Tools for Design
Research, Book Design

As communication becomes more emotional, provocative, and interpretive, metaphors become more and more relevant – not only as tools for clarity, but also as instruments of influence, ambiguity, and personal reflection. Especially in our fast-paced and pluralistic society, where meaning is shaped by individual experience rather than universal truths, metaphors create space for diverse interpretations. This makes metaphors an important tool for shaping how we perceive and share the realities of our time.

The project explores the role of metaphors in design as a tool for creating form and meaning. The final research project consits of a book, a metaphor generator, a catalogue of questions and a collection of metaphors relating to the design practice. To get people to engage with the semantic dimension of metaphors, they were able to create their own random metaphors during the exhibition. Sentences that visitors got stuck on were collected in the process.
